The Process of Reproducing Fine Art:
Step One
![]() |
Imacon 4040 and Hassleblad |
The original painting must be converted into digital format. This is usually done in our purpose-built photographic studio. The painting is photographed digitally, using an Imacon 4040 digital camera back on a Hassleblad medium format camera. This cutting edge, museum quality technology enables a digital file of the highest resolution and colour accuracy to be made directly from the camera, eliminating the losses in quality that are inevitable when producing a digital file from a transparency.
Sometimes, it is preferable to have an original, usually a watercolour or similar scanned directly on our Imacon Progression III 'Flextight' scanner.
When a photograph has previously been taken of a painting, perhaps because the original has been sold, the film will be scanned. This will usually be a 4 x 5 transparency or larger.
Photographers wishing to have their work produced as giclées will have the film or negative scanned on the 'virtual drum' of the Progression scanner. This provides the cleanest file, with the best shadow detail possible.
Step Two

Once in a digital format, the file is worked on to correct colour and make tonal and contrast adjustments. There is a setup fee payable for this. Signature removal and addition of text (if required) are included and are done at this stage. This exacting work requires a good eye for colour and a finely tuned professionally colour-managed workflow for the reproduction of fine art. Sophisticated Gretag Macbeth colour profiling and calibrating hardware and software completes the combination. The setup fee is a one-time payment to ready the file for printmaking.
Our colour technician is Adobe and Gretag Macbeth trained.
Step Three
The file is then ready for printing. We print up to three test prints on your chosen media (see our choice of media) for you to inspect, to ensure that you are completely satisfied with the finished print. These are included in the setup fee. Once you are satisfied with the results, this approved copy is archived at Innovative Imaging Studio for future colour reference. The digital file is also stored in our studio, preserving all the information to ensure consistent results in future prints.
For the reproduction of photographs and giclée prints of the finest quality and the most accurate and vibrant colours combined with the most reliable archiveability, we use a variety of professional printers with the widest gamut of inks available for the different media. The amazing gamut possible with these combinations gives us the flexibility to print colour prints with incredibly smooth gradients, fine detail and an image resolution of up to 2880dpi.
Media
Using the ink combination that will make the most of your edition, we print on a wide choice of 100% cotton rag or cellulose based Watercolour or Canvas or Photographic media, according to your choice. To see a full list of our media see our media table which will open in a separate browser window.
Limited edition giclée prints are delivered with an Innovative Imaging Studio certificate of authenticity, and care instruction sheet. We also can advise artists on framing and handling of giclée prints. There may be a charge for colour correction of digital files, depending on the your requirements.
Custom Framing and Matting
The framing and matting service offered by Innovative Imaging Studio gives our clients the option to order their prints ready to hang for their collectors or for display. We have a wide selection of wood and metal frames with finishes and profiles to best compliment your art. Our mats are the finest quality of archival material in a wide range of shades.
Our presentation packages are perfect for displaying prints to prevent damage from handling and shipping. They include acid free, resealable clear bags and museum quality foam board to which the print is attached with archival photo corners.
Certificate of Authenticity and our Printer's Chop
The Innovative Imaging Studio Certificate of Authenticity is the assurance that you give to your clients that each print has been inspected and approved by our printers. A sample of this certificate can be seen here.
Each fineart and photographic print produced by Innovative Imaging Studio has the option of having our 'Printer's Chop' placed at the bottom right edge of the print, in the white border. This corresponds to the embossed seal on the Certificate of Authenticity, so that the purchaser sees that this print is accompanied by the correct certificate and has been inspected and approved by Innovative Imaging Studio. An example of a print with the "Printer's Chop" on the bottom can be seen here.
Your collectors will appreciate the care that is taken to produce your prints and to provide them with the appropriate documentation. As well, each print that leaves our studio is accompanied by a sheet of care instructions to give to the purchaser. This way you are supplying everything needed to ensure that your client knows exactly how to best care for their special print.
