The Process of Reproducing Fine Art:

Step 1:

The original painting must be converted into digital format. This is usually done in our purpose-built photographic studio. The painting is photographed digitally, using a digital camera back on a Hassleblad medium format camera. This cutting edge, museum quality technology enables a digital file of the highest resolution and colour accuracy to be made directly from the camera, eliminating the losses in quality that are inevitable when producing a digital file from a transparency.

When a photograph has previously been taken of a painting, perhaps because the original has been sold, the film will be scanned. This will usually be a 4 x 5 transparency or larger, scanned directly on our Imacon Progression III 'Flextight' scanner. This scanner will digitize at the highest resolution and with the highest gamut possible.

Photographers wishing to have their work produced as giclées will have the film or negative scanned on the 'virtual drum' of the Progression scanner. This provides the cleanest file, with the best shadow detail possible.

Step 2 :

Once in a digital format, the file is worked on to correct colour and make tonal and contrast adjustments. There is a setup fee payable for this. Signature removal and addition of text (if required) are included and are done at this stage. This exacting work requires a good eye for colour and a finely tuned professionally colour-managed workflow for the reproduction of fine art. Sophisticated Gretag Macbeth colour profiling and calibrating hardware and software completes the combination. The setup fee is a one-time payment to ready the file for printmaking.

Our colour technician is Adobe and Gretag Macbeth trained.

Step 3 :

The file is then ready for printing. We print up to three test prints on your chosen media for you to inspect, to ensure that you are completely satisfied with the finished print.
